Jupiter History
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, often used as the town's symbol, was built in 1860 and is the most notable landmark of Jupiter. The Lighthouse is open to the public and can be toured.
Jupiter's name has an interesting history. Originally called Hobe after the Indian tribe living in the Loxahatchee River, the name was misunderstood over the years by mapmakers who changed the spelling to Jobe, then Jove, and finally Jupiter. Jupiter is the chief Roman god and is god of light, the sky, and the weather.
